Owner 'Tricks' Cat Into Taking In 3-Week-Old Kitten From Different Litter

A foster parent hoping to connect a bottle-fed kitten with a new motherly figure found inspiration from other videos.

Morgan Miller, who fosters cats from a local Michigan organization, told Newsweek via TikTok that she's seen videos of abandoned kittens being cared for by nursing cats, which sparked an idea. Why not try taking Ferguson, the 3-week-old kitten she was bottle-feeding, and putting him with a mama cat and her litter? If others could do it, maybe she could too.

A kitten's survival rate is higher when placed with a lactating cat, compared with being bottle-fed, says Australia's Animal Welfare League NSW. However, there are risks when adding a kitten to a new litter or introducing it to a new mother. A new kitten placed with a different litter could mean health risks, the mother might not have enough milk to feed all the kittens and a new one, or the mother might not accept the orphan kitten.

"I figured I'd give it a try," Miller said. "Surprisingly, it worked!"

In her October 27 TikTok video (@momomiller1215), Miller explained how she tricked her foster mama cat into thinking Ferguson was part of her litter. She placed the kitty inside the box where the momma and her kittens stayed. Instantly, the mother welcomed Ferguson. She cleaned him and let him nurse without skipping a beat.

"I guess I'm off bottle-feeding duty," Miller said in the video.

The acceptance of Ferguson came as a surprise but also a relief because not every mother cat willingly adds a new kitty to the mix. Since then, she's thought of Ferguson as part of the family and "chases after him like one of her own kittens," Miller said.

Although they were supposed to be fosters, Miller fell in love with this duo. All the other cats have been adopted, but the mama and Ferguson have become foster fails. She said she gets attached to all the cats that come through her house as fosters, but she grew especially close to Ferguson after bottle-feeding him.

TikTok users applauded the mama cat and her willingness to take Ferguson in. However, this didn't come as a surprise to many viewers.

"No tricks necessary...she knows. She is just a very special queen," wrote one viewer.

Another added: "Not surprised cats are excellent mothers. They love their babies and human babies as well."

A third person said: "I adore how momma cats will share babies and duties with each other. She's like, 'Ah, yes another thank you.'"
