Woman Finds Lost Pup Running Across Highway, Internet in Tears Over Heroism
While traveling on a highway in Arizona, a woman spotted a small dog lost in traffic, and took him away to safety. The video of the rescue immediately went viral, and internet users have praised the heroic gesture.
The clip, shared on TikTok in November under the username @gmgomps, shows the pup getting in the way of big cars driving by, before the poster enters the scene, walking into the traffic to grab him.
"We caught him," reads layover text in the clip. The caption says: "Today was a scary one for this lil guy. he was wearing a collar with no information or microchip—he is now safe at the Maricopa County Animal Shelter." Newsweek reached out to @gmgomps for comment. We could not verify the details of the case.
The highway is one of the most dangerous places for a dog to be; in fact, over 1.2 million dogs are hit by cars each year in the United States alone. That is why it's important to report stray or lost dogs to the authorities immediately.
The Humane Society of the United States says that the best thing you can do when trying to help a lost pet is to be careful and avoid creating any more problems.
Before stopping your car to help the pet, make sure your turn on your signal and then get your vehicle completely off the road to avoid causing an accident. If the pup looks approachable, try to lure them into your car with some food.
If they are in the middle of the road and you are close enough to grab them, make sure they can see you at any time, to avoid unnecessary aggression. When the dog is away from the cars, you can all animal control services or take them to a nearby animal shelter.
Even if you want to keep the animal, you must call animal control first and have it scanned for a microchip, so they can ensure that the pet doesn't have a family looking for them.
The video quickly went viral on social media and it has so far received almost 650,000 views and over 70,000 likes on the platform.
