Laughter as Dog Reminds Owner Why She Can't Have Ornaments on Tree

A woman has left social media viewers laughing by testing out whether she could put ornaments on her Christmas tree with her mischievous golden retriever nearby. Spoiler alert: It's a no.

The hilarious video, posted on TikTok by user @frankieandthedood, shows just how much Frankie, the golden retriever, loves to take the decorations off the Christmas tree. The captions layered over the clip say that the owner couldn't put any ornaments on the tree last year because "Frankie thought they were toys."

She hoped that this year would be different, though, and that over time her cheeky pup had calmed down and learned to appreciate the decorations from afar. She decided to take the risk and adorn her tree with a variety of baubles, hoping that Frankie would understand they're not for him to play with.

That wasn't the case, as the video shows Frankie desperately trying to pull the decorations off the branches. The footage shows him being scolded repeatedly for his antics, but it still wasn't enough to deter him. Those round baubles were simply too enticing.

Since the video was posted November 18 on TikTok, it has gone viral, with more than 3.4 million views and over 350,300 likes. Frankie's owner might not be too pleased about his behavior, but TikTokers can't get enough.

Indeed, the caption alongside the video jokes: "I'm 1 day away from taking all the ornaments down."

Putting up the Christmas tree can be a fun and joyous occasion, but it also can be stressful if a dog doesn't understand that there's a look but don't touch policy. Thankfully, there are ways to overcome this and make the holiday season a little bit easier.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) recommends tethering the tree to a hook to stop it from toppling and monitoring your dog to avoid pine needle ingestion. Other suggestions include hanging bells on the lower branches to act as an alert any time the dog becomes curious and keeping all delicate or special ornaments up high. Not putting them on the tree is also an option.

If owners want even more protection for their tree, the AKC advises them to put a barrier around it, such as an exercise pen to block off any access.
