Senior Dog Has Hilarious Reaction to Energetic Rescue Pup: 'Unimpressed'
A recently adopted rescue dog could barely contain his excitement during a sleepover at his new owner's mom's house.
Stacy Lorenzen from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, shared hilarious footage on TikTok of her adult daughter Carlie's new dog Sugar getting in some much-needed zoomies during a recent stay at her home.
"Carlie, and her best friend, Sidney, are starting college and moved into their own apartment. They had been discussing getting a rescue, so, one Saturday in April, they took a visit to the Sioux Falls Humane Society where they fell in love with Sugar," Lorenzen told Newsweek. "They filled out the paperwork, got approved, and brought her home that day."
It is clear that Sugar is loving the opportunity to explore in a safe and loving environment since leaving the shelter.
"The Humane Society took her in as a stray. They estimated her age to be 2 and that she is part-yellow Lab, part-golden retriever," Lorenzen said. "At first, she was very calm and skittish. But, as she's gotten more comfortable in her home and with her new people, she has thrived and become more energetic and curious."
However, one dog who is definitely not amused by it all is Lorenzen's senior English springer spaniel, Mickey. As Sugar tears through the house in the video, running up and down the stairs, under the dining room table and even up onto a bed, Mickey cuts a thoroughly unimpressed figure.
Mickey has been a part of Lorenzen's family for nine happy years. "When my daughters were 10 and 14, their dad and I were going through a divorce," she said. "When they were very young, we had a beagle, but she went over the rainbow bridge. I thought it was a good time to revisit another pet to help them get through and help keep their minds off our family breaking apart."
Given that she already had one dog in the form of Mickey, Lorenzen was more than happy to look after Sugar while Carlie and her roommate traveled to Minneapolis for a weekend recently.
It's fair to say Mickey was a little less happy about that decision, however. Though it might not seem like it right now, introducing Sugar to Mickey was a wise decision.
A study published in the journal Evolution, Medicine & Public Health last year saw researchers conduct a survey involving over 21,000 dogs and their owners. It looked at how environmental factors such as income, age and residential setting impacted their dog's health.
The biggest take-away from the study was that canines living with another companion animal were "significantly healthier than dogs with fewer household companions."
It is clear from Lorenzen's video, which has received over 1.9 million views, that it's going to take a few more sleepovers for Mickey to get used to Sugar's high-energy antics.
"Mickey was so unimpressed," Lorenzen said. "She is a very anti-social dog and keeps to herself. She has never played with other dogs and, to be quite frank, is annoyed by them when they are up in her business. Her main focus life is her ball and food. Mickey has high energy when playing with her ball, but has never had the zoomies."
However, with a little time, that approach might soften; Mickey wouldn't be the first senior dog to warm to a new arrival. It might not look like it here, but this could be the start of a beautiful friendship that could even help Mickey live long into her senior years.
