Compilation of Times Dog Tried to Impress Cat Delights Internet

A video of a "very talented" dog rolling around in front of a cat in an attempt to "impress" his feline friend has gone viral on TikTok.

The clip was posted by @sillyannx and has garnered over 141,000 views since it was first shared on June 6. The canine featured in the video is a Jack Russell terrier, according to a later comment by the poster, who wrote "both him and his brother are Jack Russells! they may be crossed with something, but they share a dad who is definitely a JRT."

A message overlaid on the clip reads: "Compilation of my dog trying to impress my cat." The footage shows a dog sitting in front of a cat in an outdoor setting. The pup is shown posing in various ways, from rolling over to crawling and bending his body to the side, while looking at the feline.

The cat's apparent unresponsiveness to the dog's enthusiastic moves is not entirely surprising, because our canine and feline companions "speak different languages," according to an August 2020 study in PLOS One.

While they may be portrayed as "mortal enemies," the study said, "most cohabitations are peaceful."

According to the study, dogs and cats that live together eat in different places and show different mutual interactions. More dogs were found to lick cats and more cats were reported to ignore dogs than vice versa. But most dogs and cats were found to sleep together "at least occasionally" as well as play together.

The study found that "although some body postures, such as the tail's position, are interpreted differently by the two species, the greater proportions of dogs and cats show a relaxed response to several kinds of approaches of their roommate.

"It is true that they speak different languages, but they seem to understand each other well and interpret each other's approaches in the right way," according to the study.
