Couple's Way to Keep Chickens in City Goes Viral: 'Prison Exercise Yard'
A chicken owner from Utah has gone viral on social media after coming up with an invention to allow her chickens to move safely throughout all the areas of the garden that they have access to.
In a post shared on TikTok on June 9, under the username @gardeningchickens, the chickens can be seen head-bobbing their way around the garden through a series of special tunnels. They were made by their owner to allow the birds to move around there with minimal supervision. The tunnels are made of metal grids that allow the chickens to see outside without giving them the chance to escape to the areas of the garden they are not allowed in.
The poster, Katie, told Newsweek that their coop is in one corner, and the birds can then cross a chicken bridge to get to yet another corner of the yard. She said: "My parents have had so much fun creating different things for their chickens as you can see in my other posts."
The garden features an elaborated coop for the chickens, with multiple floors and departments, and lots of fenced areas for the birds to freely roam around.
WebMD says that chickens can be excellent pets if taken care of properly, and maintaining them is not a hard task.
Because chicken prefer the outdoors, it is advisable to keep them outside of your house, possibly in a secure coop. However, just because they are outside, it doesn't mean that they don't need your company like cats or dogs would.
"Most chickens do well when housed in cages. You can get a cage with segments where the chickens can climb. If you prefer to house your chickens outside your home, make sure you cover the cage to prevent attacks by predators like eagles and vultures," the WebMD website added.
The video quickly went viral on social media, getting viewers from across TikTok. It has so far received over 43.7 million views and more than 1.6 million likes on the platform.
One user, Samiamou812, commented: "I hate doing the weedeater I did that by the fence line I wouldn't have to."
Dennis San Vicent433 posted: "Our coyotes & hawks have been decimating the flock, gotta make their prison exercise yards!"
Sandra Css wrote: "I didn't realize it was a tunnel, I kept asking myself how u got them to walk in such a straight line."
Melo added: "I love this. Everyday I'm like you don't need chickens. Then I see this and think yes I do need chickens."
