Corgi Picking Up on Owner's Sign Language Wows Viewers, Reaches 28M Views

While a dog's ability to pick up on her owners' sign language proves impressive, the couple learned the hard way they need to be careful what they sign.

Owner Derek Cassese, known on TikTok as @thesigningd, shared in a June 25 TikTok video the story of how his corgi picked up on American Sign Language (ASL) which has quickly gained over 28 million views. Cassese told Newsweek that he trained his 9-year-old dog through hand signals, but once he got together with his wife Emily, Eowyn quickly learned ASL and more specifically, the signs for her favorite words.

This started six years ago when Cassese and Emily began their long-distance relationship. During her first visit, Eowyn picked up that Emily was deaf almost immediately. He noticed Eowyn banging on the side of the bed instead of barking to wake Emily, which she still does today. A couple of months later when they moved in together, they started signing full-time.

Known to be an intelligent dog breed, corgis are sometimes too smart for their own good, getting into mischief and bending the rules for their benefit. And Eowyn did exactly that as she started to pick up on ASL signs.

She learned the signs for her favorite words: breakfast, dinner, ball and cookie, among others. When she spots the sign for one of those words, she will start barking. Cassese said they both find it awesome and cool, however, it is also frustrating as they now have to be careful not to slip a word Eowyn knows into the conversation.

In the clip, Eowyn lost it when Cassese signed the word "ball." He told Newsweek she ran to the door ready to play. Her ears shot straight up when she heard "dinner." But not every word yields a positive reaction.

Cassese said she somehow learned "fail" and she'll become grumpy whenever she notices them using it in a conversation. It even happened during their wedding vows. As they promised to stand by each other through life's successes and failures, Eowyn spoke her mind.

Eowyn also hates the word "bath." Like a typical dog, she will run away when that forbidden word is spoken in the house.

Hoping to correct the behavior, they turned to spelling out the words. But Eowyn's sharp-as-a-tack mind has started to understand the spelling, Cassese said. Soon enough they won't be able to get anything past her.

'Bilingual Pup'

To say viewers were impressed with this dog's language skills would be an understatement. In less than a week, the TikTok clip amassed over 28.1 million views, 5.1 million likes and 14,900 comments.

"This is actually so cool and impressive of your corgi," wrote a viewer, while another called the dog a "bilingual pup."

One user pointed out: "Her ears perked up when you first signed her name."

And while the owner called this corgi's ability to understand sign as a problem, someone chimed in: "That's an adorable problem to have."
