Tears at Puppy's Reaction to FaceTime Call With Owner's Boyfriend: 'Dad?'

A puppy's reaction to seeing her owner's boyfriend on a video call has melted the hearts of viewers online.

Cinna, a miniature dachshund, was shown staring into a tablet screen once her owner's boyfriend, Joe O'Connor, popped up on a video call. The Irish couple had been apart for over a week, which left Cinna searching everywhere for her "dad." The cream-shaded sausage dog's reaction was posted on TikTok by user @cinna_the_mini_dachshund on June 28.

"I could see she was dearly missing my partner," Cinna's owner, Mai-Christine Hoang, told Newsweek. "We decided to try to FaceTime Joe as a way to make her feel better, to maybe let her know he's not forever gone.

"We genuinely thought she would be delighted to see and hear him, which she was at first, but then she quickly became frustrated and sad when she realized he wasn't actually here. She tried to touch the screen and even looked behind it."

Viewers were able to see the 7-month-old puppy, who had been resting with a forlorn expression on her face, jolt upright as soon as O'Connor became visible on the call. She continued to keep her focus on the tablet's screen, before starting to sniff around the device—presumably to check if O'Connor was there.

"She has been the center of my world since we got her," Hoang said. "I work remotely, so I spend most of my time with her. She's my little shadow, and she has been following me everywhere."

"She's not just a pet to us but a member of our family," she added.

The video's text overlay said, "My puppy hasn't seen my bf for over a week and she misses him."

Dachshunds are known for their loyalty and the strong bonds they form with their owners, often forging a particularly close attachment to one person in the household.

This breed, with its distinctive long body and short legs, thrives on companionship and can become affectionate toward and protective of their chosen person. Their tendency to develop a deep, singular attachment is often attributed to their history as hunting dogs, where close collaboration with their handler was essential.

Cinna's owner drew attention to the puppy's close bond with her partner in the post's caption, writing, "She's been looking everywhere for Joe O'Connor since I got back from our holiday early without him."

The post has gained viral attention on TikTok, receiving more than 3 million views in three days. In the comments section, viewers have gushed over the moment.

"Aww, she was looking behind the iPad to see if he was there," one user wrote.

Another added, "He has to come back ASAP!"

"She got sad he wasn't there in person at the end," a commenter said.

"To me, she's the perfect puppy—she's the most entertaining puppy to watch; she could make me laugh or cry all day—but I'm obviously just biased," Hoang said. "I never thought so many people would see this side of Cinna and actually enjoy that FaceTime video.

"I received so many requests to post an update about Joe and Cinna's reunion, too, which was the moment I was waiting for all week, so it felt surreal that other people were looking forward to seeing it, too!"

Cinna's owner had said in response to one viewer's comment that her partner would be arriving home the following day. On June 30, she posted Cinna's reaction to finally seeing O'Connor in person, writing in the post that O'Connor is Cinna's "favorite person."

Hoang said she realized her love for dogs a few years ago after dog-sitting. The couple settled on the miniature dachshund as their breed of choice because of their unique appearance and quirky personalities. They named her Cinna because she loves curling up like a cinnamon roll.

In the weeks before the video, the pair had been away for a wedding, with Hoang returning home a week earlier than O'Connor.

She said: "After the wedding, I came back earlier than Joe to avoid leaving Cinna too long. She was extremely happy to see me, but she also went looking for Joe immediately."
