Golden Retriever Puppy Swims for First Time, Her Reaction Is Everything
While some dogs need gentle encouragement to get in the water, one golden retriever puppy has gone viral thanks to her love of swimming.
Ashley Liacko, 28, and her fiance, Gino Zanrosso, 34, live in Los Angeles with their puppy, Junie B. Last week, Liacko posted a video on TikTok, under the handle @ashleyliacko, showing Junie's "first pool day."
Liacko told Newsweek: "Since we live in SoCal it gets really hot, so we wanted to introduce her to the water at a young age, and she jumped right in. She absolutely loved it."
The video—which, at the time of writing, has received almost 6 million views and 1 million likes—shows the pup barely hesitating before wading into the pool, swimming over to her owner and taking to it all like, well, a fish to water.
Junie swims, jumps and gets cuddles in the water, before the video ends with her being wrapped in a towel and taking a post-swim nap in the sunshine.
Thousands of viewers commented on the video, with one writing, "Not to be dramatic but I would die for Junie B."
Another said Liacko "might have the cutest dog ever."
"Oh to be a dog sleeping post-swimming in the sun," a user wrote.
"The last shot sleeping in the sun was adorable," another commenter agreed.
Some dogs, more than others, have a natural affinity for water, with the American Kennel Club listing the American water spaniel, curly-coated retriever and Labrador retriever as some of the best swimmers.
While goldens aren't on the list, many owners have noticed the breed's love for water. Liacko said her sister's retriever loved to swim, and they had hoped Junie would be the same.
Liacko—who has a saltwater pool, meaning there is less chlorine in the water—called Junie B the "most lovable dog."
"She's incredible with people and is the most special addition to our family. I love that we've been able to share her lovable personality to the world," she said.
Liacko and her fiance welcomed Junie into their family earlier this year, after discussing getting a retriever for "a very long time."
The couple had initially planned to get a puppy after their wedding. But after experiencing a "really hard year," during which they had to move from their home, they ended up getting a place with a yard. Out of the city and closer to family, they began speaking daily about getting a dog.
So when Zanrosso joked as he left for a golf trip that he wouldn't mind if a puppy were waiting for him when he got home, Liacko acted. When he returned home days later, Junie B. was there to greet him.
Liacko and Zanrosso, who are due to marry next year, are now in the throes of puppyhood, with Junie B loving to "eat everything she can get her paws on." But Liacko said they "wouldn't trade her for the world."
She added: "After the hard year we had, she brought so much love and life into our world. I hope the video brings people the same happiness to their day that we experience with her every day."
