Laughter at Cat's 'Priceless' Way of Keeping Owners From Sleeping In
A video of a cat attempting to get its owners' attention with an unusual "musical" number has gone viral on TikTok.
The clip was shared by @ashford.squirrel and has amassed more than 3.2 million views since it was first posted on June 16. A message overlaid on the video reads: "This is why we don't sleep in at our house."
The footage shows a cat sitting on top of what appears to be a dresser with a small fan on it. The feline is seen harping away at the device, moving its paw across the blades, creating a loud reverberating noise.
The cat's unusual behavior could be down to the fact that our feline companions are crepuscular, "which means their peak hours of activity occur at dawn and dusk," veterinarian Dr. Michelle Meyer told Newsweek in July 2021.
While there is no need for domesticated cats to hunt for food, hunting behavior at twilight hours is still engrained in them, says The San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
Veterinarian Dr. Kira Ramdas also told Newsweek in July 2021 that, during the early morning hours when felines are most active, "they may attack your feet, which is a normal predatory hunting behavior that is instinctual for cats."
Teresa Keiger, a licensed allbreed judge at the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA), which is described as the largest registry of pedigree cats, previously told Newsweek that felines tend to wake up from their late afternoon nap at around sunrise and sunset and start to become more active. They will stalk the food bowl, investigate things around the house, and engage in hunting and playing activities.
"They may still be somewhat active late at night, but, usually, they follow their owners' sleep patterns and curl up for the evening until daylight comes again," Keiger said.
'Priceless'
