Woman Takes German Shepherd to Skatepark, Discovers He's Not a 'Sk8r Boi'
A dog who wanted to check out the skatepark has gone viral as his owner admitted he is "definitely not a sk8r boi."
German shepherd Gary lives with his owner, Georgia Louise, in the U.K., and on a recent walk, the dog decided to try out the ramps as they were passing a skatepark.
A video of his attempt has gone viral, racking up more than 130,000 likes and over 652,000 views since being shared to her TikTok account, @georgialou1se, on June 17. The clip shows Gary curiously starting to walk up a silver ramp, before instantly slipping and sliding all the way back down. Gary is not deterred, however, as he walks over to another ramp and attempts to walk up it again, this time slipping so hard that he appears to trip over his own paws.
And, naturally, the 2002 hit track "Sk8er Boi" by Avril Lavigne plays in the background over the video, even as Georgia Louise wrote on the video: "He is definitely not a sk8r boi."
German shepherds such as Gary are known to be courageous and confident, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC), so it's no wonder the pup felt ready to tackle the ramps. Described as a dog lover's delight, their fiercely loyal, protective and intelligent nature makes them popular family pets.
In 2023, German shepherds were named the fourth most popular dog breeds in the U.S., behind the French bulldog, Labrador retriever and golden retriever, and one ahead of the poodle.
TikTok users loved the video, with one writing that Gary looked back at the ramp as if to say, "what did you do that for?"
"Maybe ballet will be more his thing," another posted, while a third wrote: "He looked so embarrassed!"
"At least he tried again," another comment read, and one user added: "Good thing he is pretty."
One enthusiastic commenter even wrote: "Close enough, welcome back Tony Hawk."
While Gary still needs to work on his skills, some dogs have mastered the art of skateboarding, with one Colorado pup, MilliePi, recently winning Newsweek's Pet of the Week for her favorite hobby.
"She started skateboarding at 8 weeks, just standing on the skateboard or sitting on the exercise ball in the living room to keep busy during snowstorms outside," her owner, Janet Sellers told Newsweek.
Teaching dogs tricks is a hobby for many pet owners, with one spaniel in the U.K. previously going viral for building his own block tower out of toy bricks.
Leo also holds a Guinness World Record for his unusual tricks, smashing the previous record for the most coins put in a piggy bank in under a minute.
While Gary may not be skateboarding professionally any time soon, Georgia Louise's other video proves that he is a well-trained dog, as she showcased him learning to sit, give the paw, lie down, roll over and more from just 8 weeks old.
