Woman Mortified as Dog Talking Using Buttons Tells Workmen to Leave: 'Bye'
A woman shared her mortification after her dog, named Baxter, recently shocked visitors in their home by telling them to leave.
The goldendoodle residing in Houston, Texas, has been trained to use a soundboard to communicate with the humans around him. However, when workmen came to build new furniture in his owner's home, the pup shocked them by making his feelings clear about their presence.
Owner, Mónica Hicks, told Newsweek that Baxter, now 8-and-a-half months old, has been using the sound buttons since he was 3-months-old.
The moment his remarkably good communication skills backfired was shared to TikTok late last month by Hicks, who said in the video: "Having a talking dog is all fun and games until he embarrasses you in front of strangers."
During the furniture setup, the workmen were surprised when Baxter used his buttons to say, "Leave human" and "Bye."
Clearly unimpressed they were busy doing their job rather than giving him attention, Baxter didn't hold his feelings back, as Hicks tells him "no baby" in response to his comments.
The workmen, in disbelief, could be heard saying: "I swear that's the first dog to ever tell me to get out. There's no taking it back either," one of them laughed, adding, "I'm not over it."
Despite being taken aback by the dog's words, the workmen were amused by the moment. "They showed him love when he approached them (they both have dogs), and we all walked away with a great story!" Hicks added.
The use of buttons for animal communication is derived from AAC for humans and known as AIC (animal-initiated communication). A relatively new phenomenon, for Baxter, it has given him more agency and strengthened his bond.
"He picked them up very quickly and now has over 70 buttons. He is a goldendoodle. The delivery guys were so cool about it. Baxter normally loves having people over, especially if they're giving him attention," Hicks told Newsweek.
Hicks shared the moment to TikTok under the username @doodleboybax. The video's caption reads: "I don't know why Baxter wants to act like he ain't got any home training when we got strangers in the house."
TikTok Users React
In the comments section, TikTok users reacted to the dog's actions in the video, which has so far gained over 700,000 views.
"Need a sign. 'Beware of dog: He won't harm you but he will hurt your feelings,'" joked Nicky.
While M1ssSee posted: "Baxter was just letting them know they've done a good job and can go home early."
"If a dog told me to leave, I would be devastated forever... Like I would not recover from that," Wunde wrote, with Haxerfox agreeing: "Thrown out by a dog...I could never recover from this."
