Laughter at Cat's 'Evil' Look to Owner After He Gets a New Puppy
A video capturing a cat's less-than-enthusiastic reaction to a new puppy in her home has left the internet in stitches.
The viral clip, posted by user @sooiedownsouth, has amassed 352,000 views since it was first posted on July 2.
The video begins with a message overlaid on the clip stating: "Pepper isn't shy with her feelings about our new puppy." The puppy is a mix between a German shepherd and golden retriever, according to a note by the poster in a later comment.
The footage shows the energetic puppy barking at Pepper, attempting to engage her in play. However, Pepper is less than impressed. A close-up view in the video reveals Pepper's stern face looking away from the overly excited puppy, appearing to signal her discontent.
A caption shared with the post simply read: "Sorry Pepper."
While the forming of a close friendship between the cat and puppy in the viral clip might seem impossible, the pair may eventually play and even sleep together occasionally. That's according to an August 2020 study in PLOS One.
Our feline and canine companions are often portrayed as "mortal enemies," the study noted, however "more and more often, dogs and cats live under the same roof" and "most cohabitations are peaceful."
Dogs and cats that live together eat in different places and show different mutual interactions. More dogs were found to lick cats and more cats were reported to ignore dogs than vice versa. But most dogs and cats were found to sleep together "at least occasionally," as well as play together, in the study.
The study found that "although some body postures, such as the tail's position, are interpreted differently by the two species, the greater proportions of dogs and cats show a relaxed response to several kinds of approaches of their roommate.
"It is true that they speak different languages, but they seem to understand each other well and interpret each other's approaches in the right way," it concluded.
