Bernedoodle Has Shocking Reaction to Hearing Harmonica for the First Time
A video of a dog's unexpected, but adorable reaction to the sound of a harmonica has left TikTok users in stiches.
The clip was shared by @elliethedoo, the TikTok account that chronicles the life of a Bernedoodle—a cross between a Bernese mountain dog and a poodle—named Ellie. The video has garnered 1.2 million views since it was posted to the social media platform over the weekend.
The video's text overlay reads: "The cutest reaction to hearing the harmonica for the first time." The footage shows Ellie sniffing the end of a harmonica that's held up to her nose by a man. The man then blows into the harmonica, which sees the pup suddenly jolt up and headbutt the camera while moving away. Laughter is heard just before the clip ends.
A caption shared with the post simply reads: "So cute."
Newsweek has contacted @elliethedoo for comment via TikTok. This video has not been independently verified.
Ellie's reaction in the viral clip is not entirely surprising because dogs respond to different types of music in different ways, according to a March 2017 study in Physiology & Behavior.
The study found that the heart rate variability (HRV) of kennelled dogs was "significantly higher, indicative of decreased stress" when dogs were played soft rock and reggae music. A "lesser effect" was seen when Motown, pop and classical genres were played.
The study stated that regardless of the music genre, "dogs were found to spend significantly more time lying and significantly less time standing when music was played."
Meanwhile, a January 2020 study in Animals found that "animals appear less stressed or anxious when exposed to classical music than to control conditions."
The study concluded that classical music "offers potentially considerable benefits in terms of animal behavior, health and welfare."
