Cat Crying for His Brother Gets Adorable Surprise: 'The Gasp'
A video of a cat's adorable reaction to his feline brother appearing to be missing in action has gone viral on TikTok.
The clip was posted by @lokidoestricks, the TikTok account of Loki, a 2-year-old feline known as "the most chaotic cat on the internet" for "pulling off new heists every week," his owner Danielle previously told Newsweek. The video has garnered 1.8 million views since it was first shared on Jun 9.
Loki was adopted in 2022 from the North Shore Animal League America on Long Island, New York, where Danielle is from.
The viral video shows Loki walking around a coffee table while another cat sits underneath it, hidden from Loki's view. A message overlaid on the screen says, "He was crying because he couldn't find his brother."
Loki's close bond with his brother comes as no surprise because cats can even learn each other's names, according to a study published in the journal Scientific Reports in April 2022.
The Japanese study, which observed household cats and cats belonging to cat cafés where many cats live together, found that cats learn the names of their "friend cats" in their daily lives.
The study found that "cats expect a specific face upon hearing the specific name of a companion" through the "spontaneous learning of relationships between names and faces in their everyday experiences, similar to what human children do."
'The Audible Gasp'
The viral video later shows Loki's brother crawling out from underneath the coffee table and looking up at Loki, who lets out a small growl upon seeing his companion. A caption shared with the post reads: "his excitement when he finds him."
Loki's heartwarming reaction to being reunited with his brother in the viral clip has melted the hearts of users on TikTok.
"The audible gasp," a TikToker named Lindsay commented, while one user wrote, "THAT LITTLE GASP MY HEARTTTTTTTTTT."
"Omg that little surprised squeak," Hi Pets said in the comments. Another TikToker, @belovedhades, wrote "The little jump."
"The way the brother knew he was looking for him. my heartttttttttt," wrote a user named voo.
"Soooo absolutely precious," Stormfly1927 said.
Newsweek reached out to @lokidoestricks for comment via TikTok and email. This video has not been independently verified.
