Abandoned Dog Holds On to Rescuer 24 Hours After Being Found: 'Pure Love'

After being abandoned in a Texas field where she survived alone for weeks among dangers of hunters such as coyotes, a puppy who now goes by the name of Sissy refused to trust humans until her rescuer won her heart with treats and lots of love and patience.

A post shared on TikTok on Monday by k9kelaroo, the owner of Kelaroo's Ruff Ranch, a 15-acre animal sanctuary hosting over 20 dogs, shows the 5-month-old pup holding on to her rescuer only one day after being found.

"Less than 24 hours ago we had to set a trap to catch this terrified, dumped puppy. She is hanging on so tightly which means she sees us as her safe place now and not a threat," the caption explains.

In a series of previous clips, the poster explains that after being alerted by some locals about an abandoned puppy she drove there with food and waited for her to be comfortable enough to take her.

However, the pup was terrified, so she had to be trapped to be taken to safety before coyotes could harm her. With the help of a large cage and a juicy steak, the poster managed to trap the puppy, who soon began to warm up to her.

After being rescued she got a good night's rest at the poster's home before visiting the vet the following day, who confirmed she had lots of old wounds and scars, some internal infection, mange spots, and swollen lymph nodes.

The pup is currently being given antibiotics after receiving her shots, and the poster confirmed that she will be staying at the sanctuary with their other rescue pups for the rest of her life.

A caption shared along with the post says: "Pt.5 Dumped hungry puppy less than 24 hours after we had to trap her because she wouldn't let humans near her. I can describe the feeling when they know they are safe and latch on to you. Pure love. We said no more, but what do you do??"

According to the Humane Society of Macomb, the most common reasons for dog surrenders include age, allergies, behavioral issues, cost, moving property, new pets, and shedding.

Each year, 6.3 million pets enter U.S. shelters, which is an average of 17,260 a day, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The number of dogs and cats taken in by pet shelters hit 46,807 during January 2023, an increase of 1,744 compared with January 2022, the 24Pet Shelter Watch Report found.

Around 920,000 surrendered animals are euthanized every year. Shelters are striving to minimize euthanasia rates by promoting adoption campaigns, spaying and neutering programs, and behavior rehabilitation.

The video quickly went viral on social media, getting viewers from across TikTok. It has so far received over 2.2 million views and 268,200 likes on the platform.
