Man Baffled Over Why Dog Won't Stop Barking at Basement: 'Borderline scary'
Completely stumped as to why his dog won't stop barking at a sump pump in the basement, an owner created a series to find a solution and viewers are invested.
The barking began about four months ago, Scott Buell told Newsweek. Tucker the puggle—part pug and part beagle—would stand at the top of the basement stairs barking uncontrollably, encouraging Buell to follow him. The two would end up in front of the basement sump pump, an appliance that pumps water out of a home.
The dog's barking continued to get louder as they stared down the pump, but to Buell's surprise, there was nothing. Now, day in and day out, Tucker will be waiting for Buell to go downstairs with him looking upset. His constant need to investigate and demanding Buell to come with him has become "borderline scary."
Buell posted about his dog's unusual behavior to his TikTok account @scottbuell as the mystery baffled him and his family. Tucker will do this to Buell and sometimes his son, but never to his wife. And their other dog is totally unfazed.
As TikTok users have become invested in the unusualness, Buell shared more clips explaining there is no rhyme or reason for Tucker's behavior. In yesterday's clip, he showed Tucker again barking and shined a light to reveal nothing hiding in the water or pipes, as some people thought could be the cause.
Following suggestions, Buell sent out a radon test, but he also doesn't believe that to be the cause. The family has lived in the house for 16 years and they would've done a radon test during inspection. Although, he's not counting radon out until the results come back next week.
And Tucker isn't new to the house either. They welcomed him to the family two years ago so he knows the house.
"He's been here and never had an interest before," Buell said.
There is another sump pump on the other side of the house and yet, Tucker is still only obsessed with this specific one. Buell looked inside the drain and found it to be "bone dry" unless something is nesting further down he cannot see. The HVAC, gas and cable lines run on the other side of the house.
While some now-dedicated viewers want a paranormal event to unfold, Buell believes it to be behavioral. Or perhaps Tucker saw a spider crawl under the door all those months ago and it has continued to trigger him, Buell theorizes.
Since the mystery has taken off, Buell said people have reached out to help. A local water company is coming to test the sump pump water and a behaviorist offered to work with him.
"I feel bad for him like why is he so amped about it," Buell said. "I'd like to understand what this is and help to untrigger him."
'Need to Know'
This specific TikTok clip amassed just under 40,000 views 1,670 likes and 550 comments within a day of being posted, however, other videos in this mystery have gained several million views.
"I'm sucked into this! I need to know what that dog knows!" said a viewer.
Another commented: "When nothing comes up my guess is GHOST!! Lol that's the only thing that would make sense OR a portal into another universe."
A third person wrote: "That baby senses something for sure!"
