Shock at Way Labradoodle Has Been Trained to Cross Street Alone
A recent TikTok video featuring a labradoodle from Atlanta, Georgia, trained to cross the street by himself, has gone viral, in a showcase of the dog's impressive obedience and training skills.
The clip, shared on Thursday by user @uhhhrehlee, shows the dog sitting on his owner's opposite side of the road, waiting patiently at a crosswalk. He is looking both ways, and crosses only when his owner gives him a vocal cue.
Training a dog is a process that takes time and patience. The American Kennel Club (AKC) provides several tips for effective dog training, such as starting with basic commands, using positive reinforcement, and practicing regularly to ensure consistency and obedience in various environments.
For pet owners inspired by this video and looking to train their dogs, the AKC suggests focusing on foundational training. Commands such as "sit," "stay," and "come" are essential for building a dog's confidence and responsiveness. Gradually introducing more complex tasks can help, but always under controlled and safe conditions.
The AKC also emphasizes the importance of recall training—teaching the dog to return to its owner on command. This can be particularly useful in ensuring the animal's safety in various situations. Training should always be conducted under controlled conditions to prevent any accidents or mishaps.
"Dogs do the things that we reinforce," the AKC adds. "Those behaviors you don't like? We usually have ourselves to thank. Owners inadvertently reinforce all kinds of undesirable things, from excessive barking at the doorbell to counter surfing.
"Keep leaving food within reach on the counter, and your dog will learn that it's worth his while to check," the AKC says.
The video quickly went viral on social media, getting viewers from across TikTok. It has so far received over 705,000 views and more than 187,000 likes on the platform.
One user, Bigdddy, commented: "My dog always walks on the sidewalks n always crosswalks if i try to cut across she'll pull me to the cross walk then walk."
Julianneporter24 posted: "My dog knows to stop and look, I've trained him to stop at every st .also because he is deaf .eye sight is everything."
Shay added: "This is an awesome command. I wish I had my dogs like this. My worst fear is my dogs getting hit on the road keep up the good work Ik [I know] that dog adores you."
