Watch How Service Dog Reveals That Owner Is Pregnant: 'Secret Is Out'
When revealing a pregnancy to their partner, many women love turning the announcement into a grand gesture that they will both remember forever.
That was certainly the plan for Jaime Simpson, who told Newsweek that she "wanted it to be special" when she told her husband Ruben that she was expecting their second child. But before she got a chance to share the exciting news, her service dog Echo took matters into his own paws.
Simpson shared a hilarious video on TikTok (@embracingecho) showing the moment Ruben walked into the room, only to be greeted by Echo, holding a positive pregnancy test in his mouth. It certainly wasn't how Simpson had envisioned the announcement, but she joked that Echo "made it special on his own."
The caption alongside the clip reads: "Now that the secret is out, I can share this very awkward golden moment caught on our home camera." The video has gone viral on TikTok with more than 4.5 million views and over 215,700 likes in just a matter of days.
"I was planning on telling Ruben the news later that night or the next day, but Echo likes to share things," Simpson said.
"I was shocked when I woke up to see Ruben holding the pregnancy test, and I was worried he'd be upset that I wasn't the one to tell him. He wasn't upset, but definitely shocked at the news. He thought it was funny that Echo told him."
As Simpson has epilepsy and postural tachycardia syndrome, Echo is trained to alert her to seizures, bring her medication, and lay on top of her during a seizure to prevent dislocations.
Echo is trained to detect the slightest changes in Simpson's health, and she believes he might have known she was pregnant before even she realized. "He would lay his head on my stomach like in my last pregnancy. He's part of the reason I took a test," Simpson told Newsweek.
It remains unclear how much dogs understand pregnancy, and how early they can detect it, but the American Kennel Club (AKC) suggests that they do notice changes in their owner.
With 60 times as many smell receptors as humans, dogs can pick up on small deviations in scent and chemical changes. For that reason, the AKC proposes that a dog will likely pick up on a change in their owner's hormones due to pregnancy. But that isn't to say that they will understand exactly what it means.
What Was the Social Media Reaction?
Simpson regularly uses her social media platform to highlight the lifesaving work of service animals. She has shared numerous videos in the past showing how Echo responds to her seizures, and they have gained millions of views on TikTok.
Although this latest viral clip didn't portray Echo's impeccable training or abilities, it did reveal just how excited he is about their expanding family.
"He was probably just excited to share something that smelled of a possible new baby. He checks on me more often and wants to lay his head on my tummy to feel the kicks," Simpson continued.
The reaction on social media has been heartwarming for Simpson, who says she feels so much love from her followers. "So many people have sent messages of support and congratulations. I want to send a thank you to everyone who has sent such kind words," she said.
She's looking forward to welcoming her second child in July and can't wait to share videos of the moment Echo meets his new sibling.
After going viral in the past, Echo has earned praise for saving her owner's life during a medical emergency. But this time round, plenty of TikTok users have lauded Echo's unquestionable honesty, leading to more than 1,100 comments.
One comment reads: "Echo spilling the secret, then checking in on you."
Another person responded: "Dog is like 'we have something to tell you and I can't wait for her to wake up!'"
While another TikTok user joked: "Dog was like show time lemme get up."
