Dog Runs for Ice Cream Every Time He Hears Van, Patiently 'Waits in Line'
The way one dog eagerly awaits a treat from the local ice cream man has delighted internet users.
A video posted to @meganmurphy_hair on Instagram showed the moment Stanley, affectionately known as "Stan the Man," ran to the ice cream truck. The footage has received more than 184,000 views in five days.
Stanley is a rescued Staffordshire bull terrier adopted by the Murphy family in 2018. For the past two years, he has been indulging in his favorite treat—ice cream. The tradition began when he received a bit of a broken cone with a small scoop from the ice cream man while the owner Megan Murphy's daughter, Cici, was having her own treat.
Now, Stanley gets a full cone each time the ice cream man arrives, which is most days in the summer months. "He hears the jingle music and barks and cries to get out the front door. If there are kids in the queue, he waits in line, wagging his tail and looking up at everyone," Murphy told Newsweek.
The video sparked a series of comments from viewers. "This is such a beautiful memory you will cherish forever," posted @rebeccahughes_fit, while @itspaulryder wrote: "I'm obsessed."
"Ah that is brilliant," added @sarahbrennanxo.
Can Dogs Eat Ice Cream?
Despite the fact dogs may enjoy ice cream, Catrin George, animal welfare specialist at Animal Friends Pet Insurance, previously told Newsweek: "While many are aware of the dangers of giving chocolate to dogs, similar caution should be applied to dairy products in general. Dogs lack the enzyme necessary to break down lactose in milk, which means that consuming ice cream can lead to severe discomfort."
As well as digestive issues, high sugar content in ice cream can cause dental problems in dogs and should be given with caution. Instead of ice cream, George suggested trying frozen fruit such as apple slices or carrots, or a frozen unsweetened yogurt treat on a hot day.
This isn't the first time a dog and an ice cream man have gained viral attention. Last year, a Labrador retriever running for an ice-cream truck delighted the internet, while before that two dogs eating ice cream gained attention for their very different approaches to the frozen treat.
The family members have delighted in Stan's newfound online fame: "We mess with Stan now, telling him he's famous because he's blown up on Instagram," said Murphy.
