Dachshund Puppy Who 'Isn't Hungry' Hides Bone in Worst Place Possible

A dachshund puppy who his owner admits is something of a "picky eater" decided to save the bone for later.

However, his efforts in hiding the chewy treat to enjoy at a time of his choosing left a lot to be desired. For as long as anyone can remember, dogs have been associated with the chewing and general enjoyment of bones.

According to Dr. Mark Reynolds, an animal behaviorist and evolutionary biologist, bones provide an opportunity for dogs to tap into their deeply ingrained instincts to scavenge for food.

"Dogs share a common ancestor with wolves, who relied on bones as a valuable source of nutrition," Reynolds told the Pet Evolution website. "The act of chewing on bones taps into their ancestral instincts and provides a sense of fulfillment."

Dr. Samantha Davis, a veterinarian and canine dental health specialist, told the same website it also has practical benefits. "Chewing on bones provides dogs with a natural mechanism for maintaining healthy teeth and gums," she said. "The abrasive action of gnawing on bones helps remove plaque buildup, preventing dental issues such as periodontal disease."

Not every dog is quite so enamored with the idea of a bone though, as Rocky, the 11-month-old jet-setting mini Dachshund from Florida demonstrates. "My fiance and I were thinking about getting a dog but since he lives in the U.S. and I was in Germany we were looking for a small dog so he can travel with us," Michelle Vach told Newsweek.

"We looked into all the dog breeds and decided we wanted a miniature dachshund. We searched on the internet for good breeders and found one in California. We fell in love with the picture of him right away."

Vach and her partner took a six-hour flight to go meet Rocky, who quickly developed a penchant for traveling by plane having completed two nine-hour flights to Germany to meet Vach's friends and family as well as one to Indiana to see her partner's relatives.

"He is used to traveling and is really calm," she said. "As soon as he sees the airport he does his business (goes to the bathroom) since he knows that he can't go during the flight."

Though he took time to adjust to his new home, Rocky is a happy, active and highly emotional pup.

"His favorite things to do are playing fetch, hiking, going on long walks, digging at the beach as well as cuddling and spending time with us," Vach said. "At first he would cry the whole time when we weren't in the same room because he is really attached to us but now it's better. He still gets really excited every time we come home, even if it is after two minutes."

Like all good dogs though, Rocky has his own unique quirks, particularly when it comes to eating. "Rocky is a really picky eater and he only eats when he is hungry. At first we had to get used to it but since we now know what he likes and the schedule when he is hungry, it's not a problem anymore," Vach said.

That pickiness extends to treats like bones. In a video posted to TikTok under the handle minidachshundrocky, Vach revealed how her pet pooch reacts when he "isn't hungry" yet gets presented with a fresh, juicy bone.

For Rocky, it's a case of saving the snack for later by burying it in the blanket. Vach said this kind of behavior isn't uncommon where her pet pup is concerned.

"The hiding is actually a survival strategy of dachshunds," she said. "They hide their surplus of food where the food can be preserved and protected in the cool ground, and then eat it later."

In this instance, Rocky was evidently concerned about his owners getting their greasy mitts on his snack. "He wanted to save it for later and protect it from us so we wouldn't take it away," Vach said. "He also does it with his toys and our things, e.g. socks, shoes."

Burying it in a blanket on what appears to be his owner's bed or at the very least couch, doesn't make for an especially effective hiding spot though as many viewers on social media were quick to note. "Best hiding spot," one user joked with another adding: "No one will ever find it."

The unusual behavior is just one example of what Vach describes as Rocky's "two-sided" character. "He has a really calm, loving side and a really crazy side. At first we didn't know why he acted crazy doing things like stealing our things, running away with our clothes and shoes, unrolling the toilet paper, biting holes in our blankets but once we figured out what he actually wanted was to know how to handle it," she said.

"Sometimes when he is hungry instead of eating his food he is going crazy. When he wants to go outside he doesn't go to the door but steals our things and runs away."

For all his quirks, however, there isn't a thing Vach would change about her eccentric and very loving pup...although his bone hiding skills definitely need a little work.
