Man Arrives Home From Work, Shocked at What Her Dog's Been Doing All Day

An adventurous French bulldog has been likened to Ferris Bueller after an escape attempt meant she and her canine brother Duke went on their own adventure while their owner was at work.

Sugar, a 5-year-old French bulldog, escaped the house while her owner was at work with 5-year-old brother Duke when a gate was left open.

"They escaped when the yard company didn't close the gate back properly after cutting the grass in the backyard," owner Micah Ethridge, who lives in Jacksonville, Florida, told Newsweek.

Fortunately, the dogs were only out for a few hours. Ethridge arrived home around 2:30 p.m., and the yard workers had left around noon. When he arrived home, Ethridge captured the moment on film in a video that has now been viewed over 1 million times on TikTok.

As he pulled up at his house, Ethridge was greeted by the dog who had been running the neighborhood for the last few hours.

"When I got home, Duke was already inside pretending like nothing happened—we have a dog door that leads to the backyard. The video is of Sugar running home right as I pulled up," Ethridge said. On TikTok a viewer humorously likened Sugar's dash home to a scene from the 1986 movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off, where Ferris races to beat his parents home.

Although it's unclear what Sugar and Duke did during their brief adventure, Ethridge said that they have previously been found playing with children at the neighborhood park. "Although I'm not sure what they were up to that particular day, they have gotten out before, and I found them just down the road playing with the children at the neighborhood park," he said.

"The Ferris Bueller of dogs," MysticButrfly said. While viewer Lno816 wrote: "That's frenchie energy. I wanna be free but not too far away from you."

"Noooo that is hilarious," said viewer miraodedra432.

Sugar, known for her affectionate nature, was quickly forgiven for her escapade. "She is doing good now. Still up to her mischief but making up for it with how loving she is. She got the name Sugar because she loves to give kisses," Ethridge said.

He also assured viewers that the gate latch has been fixed to prevent future escapes. "The good news is that we have fixed the gate latch so that this will not happen again moving forward, hopefully!"
