Laughter at Cat Who 'Hates Being Held,' But Follows Owner Around All Day
A cat named Agnes has gone viral on social media after her owner shared her peculiar behavior, which turned out to be not so uncommon among cats.
In a hilarious video, shared on Instagram in June under the username agnesthetuxedo, the rescue tuxedo cat can be seen trying to get close to her owner in every possible way, from following her around the house to spying on her from under the table, all while avoiding being picking up under any circumstances.
A caption shared along with the viral clip explains: "When you have a girl cat who hates being held but wants to be near you at all times."
The poster, Hannah Russell from Boston, told Newsweek that Agnes is a three-year-old cat that she rescued from a local shelter, and she's a very sassy girl.
"She loves to run around, play on her jungle gym, and follow me around. As you can tell from that clip, she loves to follow me around everywhere but never likes to be picked up! She's very much [of] a 'affection on my own terms' type of kitty!
"It's been awesome to see so many other owners tell stories about their similar cats in the comments. I like hearing about how people looooove their not-super-affectionate kitties."
Russell added that she recently welcomed a little kitten into their home, and Agnes is adjusting amazingly well as they go through the introduction process.
"Adopting a cat and welcoming them into your home is such a fulfilling experience, I recommend that everyone adopt and not shop. Even sassy previous stray cats like Agnes can make amazing companions," she added.
While social media shows plenty of cats behaving affectionately toward their owners, asking for cuddles and even kisses, it is also normal for cats to want their own space and refuse human attention.
If your cat doesn't let you hold them and squeeze them, don't worry too much about it, there are better ways for you to show them your love that they will surely appreciate.
Newsweek previously asked veterinarians for the best ways to show your feline affection and some of them might sound surprising. You can simply stroke them in places you know they will appreciate, like their neck or forehead, or let them nap on your lap.
Cats also appreciate playtime together. Moreover, you can spoil your cat with treats and training sessions, or you can even treat them to a catnip toy. You can read more about how to show your cat love here.
The video quickly went viral on social media, getting viewers from across TikTok. It has so far received over 8.3 million views and 430,279 likes on the platform.
One user, ashh___cashh, commented: "Wow I thought I was the only one experiencing this. I be seeing all these videos of cats who love to be held and I was like what am I doing wrong lol."
Corvidae.1917 added: "This is definitely my cat, my girl Ivy follows me around a lot, especially when she hasn't seen me in a while and is excited. She doesn't like being cuddled often but she will accept the occasional short hug when she's sleepy.
"Completely different to her brother Aslan - he loves to be held but spends a lot of time asleep in tight comfy spots where we can't reach him - he loves snuggling into small spaces."
