German Shepherd Takes Begging to Next Level After Learning How to Point
Owners usually understand what their dog is asking for, even without verbal communication. But one canine learned to take begging to the next level, making it very clear what she wants.
In a July 24 TikTok video, one owner was trying to enjoy a meal on the couch while relaxing and watching television. The clip posted to the account @whitneylauren846 showed the couple's German shepherd sitting right in front of her dad, alert and ready for her portion of his food.
The dog strategically posed up between the owner and the television, blocking his view. She stared him down with hopeful eyes. That would be enough for any owner to understand that the dog is only there for the possibility of getting food, but, to drive the message across, the pet used her paw and pointed directly at his plate.

The German shepherd held up her paw confidently and strongly. Then, she started moving the paw in a pulsing motion, hoping to direct his gaze to what she wanted. The pup was letting him know that the plate of food was what she wanted, and she wanted it immediately.
The video text overlay reads: "POV [Point of view]: your dog doesn't beg, she just pointed at what she wants."
This isn't a one-time moment captured on the home's security camera. The German shepherd is no stranger to pointing when it comes to getting her way. Another clip shows the pet doing the same thing to her mom.

Begging for food or a treat is a learned behavior for pups. When they give you those puppy-dog eyes and whimper a "pretty please," a reward usually follows. Over time, the canines start associating a person's plate with a nibble of human food, PetMD experts say. Eventually, owners find themselves never eating in peace with their dogs around. And for these pet owners in the viral video, they are getting used to the pointing.
