A 16-year-old girl who was moved to tears after a recent trip to her local animal shelter pleaded with her family that a special dog there needed to be adopted.

In a July 26 TikTok video posted by user @j.bugslife, the daughter filmed a dog that caught her eye while she visited the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS). This dog was the only one in the animal shelter that didn't come to the front of the kennel. He was shy and scared.

Most people wouldn't give the dog a second look because he didn't make his presence known. Plus, he was abused and neglected. Flies were on his skin, and he had an ear infection. But the daughter didn't hesitate.

She immediately called and asked to adopt him since "her heart couldn't handle it." By the next day, Charlie was home with his new family, recovering from his previous trauma and the stressful shelter life.

The caption reads: "This is going to be a hard expensive task but we can do it!"

Luckily, the task of adopting a shelter dog hasn't given the family too much trouble. He was nervous, as most adopted dogs are, but in follow-up videos he's seen adjusting fine, even sleeping with his belly facing up, which is a sign of trust.

"He's adjusting amazing!" the owner told Newsweek via TikTok. "Truly, all this baby needed was love, and he is blooming."

The owner said the dog's only issue so far is how excited he gets and "flea biting" the family's 20-month-old. Flea biting is when a dog lightly bites or nibbles their skin using their teeth. A dog might do this because it is trying to save you from flea bites, it has fleas or it's simply a way of showing love and affection.

BARCS told Newsweek what this adoption meant to the shelter, saying: "At BARCS, we have hundreds of dogs and cats in the shelter at any given time. The scared ones, especially larger dogs, are easy to overlook when there are other happy-go-lucky animals coming right up to the front of their kennels.

"We are so happy that Charlie's family gave him a chance and welcomed him home," BARCS went on. "Like every animal that comes through our doors, he deserved a second chance. He got that and so much more. We are thankful for every adopter that can see past the initial kennel presence and save a life."

TikTokers React

TikTok viewers were instantly hooked by the precious clip, which had over 11.6 million views and 1 million likes as of Tuesday.

"I'm crying poor baby. Thank you for saving him," said one viewer.

Another added: "Thank you for helping him...he needed you...and you needed him. As a shelter worker...I can tell."

A third person wrote: "Your daughter is an angel. She chose the one no one wanted. God bless her, and you and your new furbaby."
