Dog Person Doesn't Know Whether to Laugh or Cry as 'Hairless Cat' Picks Her
For some people, there's no better feeling than a cat coming up to you for cuddles. That was not the case for one woman, whose horrified face at being chosen by a hairless cat is seen in a viral video.
Megan Garland, 34, is from Florida and the proud owner of a sphynx cat, Mila. The breed is notable for its lack of fur, and Garland told Newsweek that Mila is her "little shadow."
"She has to be in any room that I'm in. If I'm sitting or laying down, she has to be on me, and we sleep together every night," she said. "As you can see in the video, she treats my friends the same."
A clip shared to Garland's TikTok account, @mila_yuri, on August 3 shows her friend Avery struggling as Mila decides she is, at that moment, her favorite person.
Rubbing against Avery's face and chin and repeatedly nuzzling against her, Mila is clearly loving every second of it. But Avery has a look of horror as she holds on to the cat.
Avery appears to be between laughter and tears, while their friend Caly can be heard encouraging her: "Don't you love that?"
Garland captioned the clip, which has over 1 million likes: "When your cat chooses a dog person..."
Garland told Newsweek that Avery "had been to my house a few times and met Mila, but is very, very weirded out by her."
Garland went on: "She's at most given her an awkward pet here or there but for the most part kept her distance from the cats. This night I really feel like Avery was singled out."
While Garland was cleaning up after dinner, Mila jumped straight into Avery's lap and started "snuggling into her."
"I truly think Avery had no idea what to do and just let it happen out of fear almost," Garland joked. "She is definitely a dog lover."
Not only that but Avery is allergic to cats. And while Mila is hairless, Avery left the house "with very swollen eyes."
TikTok users were struck by the video, with one writing: "I swear cats LOVE people that don't love them." Another declared: "Spectacular I'll take 14 of them."
Another user wrote: "The fact it's a hairless cat makes this even better."
And as one user put it: "That's an affectionate raw chicken you have there."
While Mila did "not succeed in converting her" into a cat person, she "certainly left an impact" on Avery, Garland said.
"She says she guesses she is more comfortable around her but really only as comfortable as you can be around a naked cat," Garland joked.
While best known for their unique look, Sphynx cats are also sociable, talkative, highly active and inquisitive, according to Purina. Many people find they are almost doglike in their affectionate nature toward humans.
Sphynxes first appeared in modern times in 1966, when a genetic mutation produced a hairless kitten in a litter of common domestic cats. But hairless cats have been present throughout history.
Garland, who also has a sphynx named Yuri, first got the breed after her husband finally agreed to have a cat as long as it was hairless.
"I honestly think it was to deter me, but that backfired on him," she said.
