Dog Surrendered to Shelter by Owner After 3 Years Given a Second Chance
An emotional post about a pup named Dixie who finally found a home after being in a shelter for almost two years has gone viral and left social media users in tears.
Shared on Facebook in August by the Associated Humane Popcorn Park Shelter, the post explains that she was returned to the shelter because of an altercation with another pet. But after nearly two years, a couple who had recently lost their dog immediately fell in love with her at an adoption event in June, and they decided to give her the best gift of all—a brand new family.
Sandra Hickman, the media coordinator at Associated Humane Societies, Ocean County Branch in Forked River, New Jersey, told Newsweek that Dixie is a very sweet dog who had just one issue that prevented her from finding a home sooner—she can't live with other pets.
"Dixie was born at our facility when her mom was rescued from a bad situation in March, 2019," Hickman said. "She was adopted to a good home as a puppy and was in that home for three years. Sadly, that person had to go away and left Dixie with a friend. Dixie had an altercation with another pet, which led to her return."
The shelter still has lots of dogs in the same position as Dixie, spending longer than usual there due to their inability to live with other pets, even though they are among the sweetest, most well-behaved, loving, affectionate dogs who love people.
"We are very fortunate at Associated Humane Societies that we are able to keep wonderful dogs like Dixie for as long as it takes to find the best, most suitable home. We're all so happy that Dixie has finally found the home of her dreams!"
Each year 6.3 million pets enter U.S. shelters, which is an average of 17,260 a day, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The number of dogs and cats taken in by pet shelters hit 46,807 during January 2023, an increase of 1,744 compared with January 2022, the 24Pet 'Shelter Watch Report' found.
According to the Humane Society of Macomb, the most common reasons for dog surrenders include age, allergies, behavioral issues, clean-up, cost, moving, new pets and shedding.
Around 920,000 surrendered animals are euthanized every year. Shelters are striving to minimize euthanasia rates by promoting adoption campaigns, spaying and neutering programs, and behavior rehabilitation.
The video quickly went viral on social media, getting viewers from across TikTok. It has so far received over 2,800 likes and 264 comments on the platform.
One user, Smilez Tutora, commented: "Great story for this beautiful animal that found the perfect caring home with good people."
Harriet Foster said: "So very happy for Dixie and a big thank you to her new family for adopting this beautiful Dog. Prayers she has a happy forever long life with her new family."
