Family Back From Vacation Think Home Was Burglarized, Quickly Find Culprit
A video of a family coming home to an unexpected chaotic scene after a week away and thinking that they'd been burgled has gone viral on TikTok.
The clip was posted by @all_things_nikki and has garnered over 596,000 views since it was first shared on June 9.
While the family initially believed there was a raid on their property, the video later reveals the culprit was much closer to home—their cat Turbo.
A caption shared with the post said: "Everyone meet Turbo! We went in vacation for a week and came home to this! It looked like our house had gotten broken into! Nope just Turbo!"
The camera pans across the room, showing their kitchen in disarray with drawers opened and food items scattered all over the floor.
Newsweek has contacted the original poster for comment via TikTok. This video has not been independently verified.
It's unknown what may have caused this cat's behavior, but studies have shown that the animals can exhibit destructive behavior due to various factors. These can include separation anxiety, which can result from excessive attachment, noted veterinarian Krista A. Sirois in a June 2020 article for PetMD.
Our feline companions are known to be quite independent. However, a study published in September 2019 in Current Biology found evidence that "cats display distinct attachment styles toward human caregivers."
The study added: "Research suggests we may be underestimating cats' socio-cognitive abilities.
"Cats, like dogs, can be found living in social groups or solitarily, depending on early developmental factors, resource distribution, and lifetime experiences such as human interaction," the study noted.
Cats may act out when they experience separation anxiety. Understanding these behaviors can help pet owners better manage and mitigate the chaos caused by our pets.
Some of the signs of separation anxiety in cats include excessive vocalization, inappropriate elimination, and destructive behavior, which is more common in male cats, as well as excessive grooming, more common in female cats, Sirois noted.
'He's Not Sorry'
A message overlaid on the viral video said, "POV [point of view]: You get home from vacation and think your house has been broken into!"
As the camera zooms in on several bags and boxes littered across a drawer, a subsequent note across the screen explains "He ate 4 bags of Alfredo [pasta], 2 boxes of rice pilaf, half a bag of marshmallow, half a bag of chocolate chips and tried the popcorn."
Another note across the screen reads: "Everyone meet who did it all. Turbo!" The camera then zooms in on a cat sitting in the kitchen, looking away from the camera, seemingly indifferent to the havoc it caused.
User on TikTok were shocked and amused by the cat's antics, while others expressed concern that he was left alone for a long period.
One wrote: "I can't believe he opened all those cupboards and drawers."
Another said, "The cat said 'bet you won't leave me again.'"
While one TikToker said: "he's not sorry and he would do it again."
But another user said: "He was left ALONE for a week!?!?!? justice was served."
A second wrote: "Omg I could never leave my cats alone and go on holiday."
