A dog's reaction to being surprised with a cardboard cutout version of himself has left Instagram users in hysterics.

Reg, a miniature dachshund, was captured barking furiously at the large cardboard display, totally unaware that it is in fact just an enlarged image of himself. The pet's owner, who manages the Instagram account @pawfectexplorer, filmed the hilarious moment and shared it to the social media platform on July 14 where it has since been liked more than 29,000 times and viewed more than 635,000 times. The short clip encapsulates the vocal and territorial behavior that most dachshunds exhibit.

In the video, Reg is seen walking along the hallway and toward the room that had been housing the new cardboard cutout. The miniature dachshund began barking as soon as he turned a corner into the room and caught sight of it, making it known that he was taken aback by the display, but keen to reaffirm that this territory belongs to him. After coming to the conclusion that the cardboard cutout was not going to answer back, Reg began walking toward the display timidly to investigate further.

The video's text overlay reads: "Surprising my dog with a cutout of himself...Oh hell no...What the...Heck is that...Is that me?"

The post had been captioned: "What to do in a new house? Surprise little Reg with a big Reg. We know how to live it up on a weekend us."

Their loyalty and bravery mean they won't hesitate to defend their territory, making them vigilant and effective protectors. However, this territorial behavior also means they require proper socialization to ensure they can distinguish between friends and perceived threats.
