Watch Journey of Cat Slowly Accepting Baby Sibling He 'Never Asked For'
The bond that gradually formed between a pet cat and his owner's baby has tugged at the heartstrings of viewers online.
Kingston, a 5-year-old feline, was captured warming up to the newest member of his family, a baby boy, in a post shared to social media by his owner, Chelsea Tilbury. The clip, which has amassed more than 12,700 likes on Instagram, provided a retelling of how the cat came to accept his owner's new baby.
"Kingston has been in my life for five years now, and last year our first child joined the family," Tilbury told Newsweek. "Kingston took his time coming to terms with the fact that he wasn't our only baby anymore."
She added: "He slowly started accepting his younger brother, and now he's always around him, which is very sweet. He's a wonderful fur baby, and therefore we call him our 'furrrrst born,' and he will always be very special for that reason."
Viewers were able to see Kingston's behavior toward the baby turn from cautious to affectionate over time. By the end of the clip, the two were filmed lying next to each other in bed, sharing a couch, and engaging in playful interactions that suggest Kingston has not only accepted the baby but become protective of him.
Text overlaid on the video said: "The journey of my cat slowly accepting the human sibling he never asked for. Fiiine.. I guess he's here to stay."
Introducing a baby to a pet cat can be a delicate process that requires patience and care to ensure both the cat and the baby feel safe and comfortable. The Humane Society of the United States offers advice on the topic, emphasizing the importance of gradual and positive interactions. The nonprofit organization advises owners to get their cats familiar with their incoming newborn's belongings, to prepare them for the changes to come.
Viewers online have been moved by the video and have taken to the comments section to voice their delight at the pair's developing bond.
"True friends," one user said, while a commenter wrote, "So protective, so beautiful."
Another added, "The babies have to stick together."
