A schnauzer in Denmark has left social media viewers laughing after her owner caught her on camera waking up from the most "epic" nap.

The viral video, shared on Instagram in July, under the username gabi_the_minischnauzer, shows the small white dog looking disheveled after waking up from her day nap, with half of her beard hanging on the side of her face.

"POV: that moment when you wake up from a nap with a beard like this: you know it was epic," a caption says. This is followed by: "Friends, who can relate?"

Dogs usually require more sleep than we do, but not all of them sleep the same hours. Various factors influence the total amount of sleep each pup needs.

The Sleep Foundation says puppies need at least 11 hours of sleep a day, and while they sleep less at night than adults do, they sleep more throughout the day.

Adult dogs need between eight and 13½ hours of sleep every day, with an average of about 11 hours. Even though they sleep most at nighttime, daytime naps are still very important to them.

Senior dogs wake up less often at night but also sleep later in the morning and take naps more frequently.

However, just like humans, dogs can also be affected by sleep deprivation. Signs include more intense reactions to stressful stimuli, irritability and mood disturbances, and poor memory.

"Sleep also appears to have a significant impact on a dog's ability to learn," the Sleep Foundation says.

The video quickly went viral on Instagram and has so far received over 8.8 million views and 335,043 likes.

Newsweek reached out to gabi_the_minischnauzer for comment via Instagram comments and could not verify the details of the case.

One user, Snickers_and_sassy_schnauzers, commented: "Bed beard at its best!"

Miss.panda.pop said: "This is my best thing ever about my schnauzer."

Bethwpr wrote: "Grew up with a mini schnauzer. This happened on the regular."

Sarc48 added: "That's how my white schnauzer looks when she gets up! So funny."

Another user, Barbarawelsh275, commented: "We love our boy's smooshed face when he wakes from a nap!"

And Merlinthemagicalminischnauzer said: "Been there, friend. Bed beard when the nap truly hits."
