Hilarious Miscommunication on Dog Walk Teaches Owner Important Lesson

Are you a regular dog person, or a crazy one? This owner has said how an unfortunate miscommunication with a fellow dog walker showed her how to distinguish between the two types of people.

In a hilarious TikTok video, Bree Mitchell (@thebreemitchell) said that she doesn't fit into the regular category as she is a "crazy dog person" instead. While walking her shepherd mix Olive, the 32-year-old told another dog walker that Olive's cousin is a husky, but the woman "didn't seem to pick up" on her definition of cousins, Mitchell told Newsweek.

Mitchell, from Atlanta, Georgia, didn't mean a blood-related cousin, but rather, her brother has a husky, making them cousins in her view. Following the miscommunication, it dawned on Mitchell that there is a key difference between the two types of dog people.

She said: "As I walked away, I realized the woman didn't know that I meant my sibling has a dog that's part-husky, so therefore they're cousins, since we're crazy dog owners who consider our dogs as children.

"I thought it was odd and funny that her first thought was that I meant an actual blood relative of my dog, versus another dog in my family that has no real DNA ties," Mitchell added.

The unexpected encounter made Mitchell realize that she fits into the crazy dog owner category as Olive is like her child and an integral member of the family.

She continued: "A crazy dog owner's life revolves around their dog, and they think of their dog as an actual child. They consider their dog's needs and wants just as much as they consider a human's wants and needs. Regular dog people think of their dog as a pet and treat them as such."

Just like Mitchell, many owners think of their pet as part of the family. A YouGov poll of 1,000 U.S. adults in 2022 found that 9 in 10 people think of their animal as a family member, and 51 percent of dog owners would even say they are their pet's parent.

Other owners consider themselves to be their dog's best friend, at 33 percent, while 32 percent would simply call themselves their owner.

Upon reaching her conclusion of what defines a crazy dog owner, Mitchell posted about it on TikTok to explain the difference. She wasn't expecting it to generate much attention, but the video quickly went viral and gained over 305, 000 views and more than 38,000 likes in a matter of days.

As it turns out, Mitchell isn't the only dog person who uses this logic, and her video has connected her with plenty of fellow owners who also say that their pups have siblings or cousins.

"All the comments are fellow crazy dog parents sharing how they totally knew what I meant by cousin right away," Mitchell told Newsweek. "Commenters also shared how their dog is considered a cousin, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, and so on."

Since the video went viral, Mitchell has loved hearing from so many people who are more than happy to brandish the title of crazy dog owner. Among the 600 comments on the TikTok video, one person posted: "Guess I'm crazy too because when you said his cousin I immediately assumed your brother's dog."

Another person wrote: "This confirmed I'm a crazy dog person."

A third comment reads: "I got another dog and immediately messaged my brother and told him he had a new niece."
