Watch German Shepherd Teach Puppy Brother To Howl: 'Fast Learner'

Life just got a lot noisier for one family in Nevada as their German shepherd dog taught his puppy "brother" just how much fun howling can be.

Charlie the German shepherd dog was caught on camera teaching 7-month-old puppy Benji how to howl, in a video that has gone viral on TikTok with more than 1.1 million views and over 111,000 likes.

Their owner, Sandra, told Newsweek the pups are "very attached to each other and act like if they were really brothers."

This was plain to see in the clip, which showed 3-year-old Charlie and puppy Benji chilling together on the sofa, with the younger dog launching into what Sandra called "howling in a weird, growling way."

"Charlie started going along with it; that's where they started howling after each other," Sandra said. As Benji's growly howl quietens down, Charlie lets out a long, mournful howl, before the puppy takes off again in a high pitch. Before long, the two are expertly duetting.

TikTok users were left in stitches, flocking to the @charliethegermanshepherd account where one commented: "He now has a shepherd accent when he howls that's cute."

"I'll start, and you join in on the chorus," another posted, while one called Benji a fast learner.

One comment read: "This is the best thing I've seen, in a long time."

Sandra, who shared the video on August 11, said that they had left the dogs with their daughter while they went to the store, and the howling started 10 minutes later.

When their daughter realized what was happening, "she decided to get it on video, and that's where Benji got the handle of the howl."

The unusual-looking puppy is a mix of Chihuahua, golden retriever and dachshund, Las Vegas-based Sandra told Newsweek.

It therefore tracks that Benji is getting in his howls early, as both dachshunds and Chihuahuas are known as vocal breeds.

Both breeds are mentioned in Wag!'s list of the top 10 most talkative dog breeds, as, notably, is the German shepherd.

The breed, like 3-year-old Charlie, is described by the American Kennel Club (AKC) as affectionate toward family and good with young children, making the dogs a popular choice for a family pet.

In 2023, the German shepherd dog came fourth on the list of the AKC's most-popular dog breeds list, after the French bulldog, Labrador retriever and golden retriever.
