Woman Takes Chance Adopting 16-Year-Old Dog, Was 'Best Decision Ever'

Senior dogs living in animal shelters are less likely to get adopted as people typically want younger and healthier canines, but one woman who took a chance on a 16-year-old dog shared her zero regrets in a recent TikTok video.

People generally gravitate toward energetic puppies when they adopt because it usually means they'll have more years to spend together and their pet will have fewer health issues. Senior dogs on the other hand might come with an extra set of problems: special requests like specific diets, less life left to live or behavioral issues caused by trauma.

TikTok user @karam_4444 didn't let any disadvantages of adopting a senior animal sway her decision. She welcomed home a 16-year-old Chihuahua that the humane society called "spunky," referring to her as a dog "far from giving up life" in a post. Kara saw that post as an opportunity to give the senior the best golden years.

Kara adopted Chi Chi in 2021 and the senior dog quickly became part of the family. As seen in the August 12 TikTok video, Chi Chi made herself comfortable. She couldn't get enough of rolling in the grass or snuggling with Kara. And for Kara, she hailed Chi Chi's adoption as the "best decision ever."

Chi Chi hasn't let age define her. The videos show her spunky personality coming to life with her barking for attention, her loose-hanging tongue going in for many kisses and the zoomies hitting instantly as soon as she sets paw on the ground.

Despite Chihuahuas having a life expectancy of 14 to 16 years, Chi Chi has been cruising well past that. Adopted at 16, Chi Chi is now living in year 19 and she's not slowing down. It's like the adoption gave her a second wind to experience a life of love after being placed in a shelter.
