Dog in Shelter for 2730 Days Finally Gets Adopted for His 'Last Years'
After spending seven long years at the Triple A Marbella animal shelter in Spain, one dog has finally found his forever home.
American Staffordshire Terrier Bipo was finally adopted at the end of July and has gotten his happily ever after to live out his "last years."
Angelika Kusanova, Head of Adoptions at the shelter told Newsweek: "Bipo was with Triple A Marbella for a long time. His friends came and went in the seven years he was here. After waking up in a kennel with cement floors and metal walls for 2,730 days, he was adopted at the end of July and now is living his best life in the Netherlands."

In 2023, 6.5 million animals entered U.S. shelters, according to Shelter Animals Count, up 4 percent when compared to 2022 intakes. At the end of 2023, 117,000 additional dogs and cats were in the animal sheltering system compared to the same time the year before.
Around 850,000 animals were euthanized in shelters in 2023, a rise of 15 percent when compared to 2022. Shelters are striving to minimize euthanasia rates by promoting adoption campaigns, spaying and neutering programs, and behavior rehabilitation.
Adopted as a puppy, Bipo was returned to the Triple A Marbella shelter when he was just one year old. His breed, which is on Spain's PPP list (perros potencialmente peligrosos, or potentially dangerous dogs), made it difficult for him to find a new home.

Breeds like Bipo's—American Staffordshire Terriers, pitbulls, and American Bullies—often face long waits in shelters and find that their best chances of adoption come from owners outside of Spain.
To further complicate things, 8-year-old Bipo has a few minor medical conditions, which made it even harder for him to find a home. During his time at the shelter, he also underwent surgery on his leg, adding to the list of challenges he faced. His black fur didn't help either, making it more likely for him to be ignored, as it made him less visible to potential adopters.

Eventually the shelter shared a call-out on its TikTok page for anyone interested in Bipo, and the video quickly gained attention from people who wanted to see him find his perfect home.
Thankfully, Bipo's luck changed when a family in the Netherlands fell in love with him and came to Spain to adopt him.
"Now Bipo is in his dream home in the Netherlands, with his mami and papi who love him very much and spoil him for all the years he missed out on," Kusanova said. "He takes a tram to town like a responsible citizen, and he hates the rain, so he'll be having quite a fashionable wardrobe of rain jackets."
