Worried Cat Owner Pays $250 for Vet Visit, Can't Believe the Diagnosis
One concerned pet parent rushed her cat to the vet, but a couple hundred dollars later, she learned her fur baby was just a bit sensitive.
TikTok user @_biggytv_ shared in an August 24 video that her cat had been peeing outside the litter box. Her immediate thought was maybe he had a urinary tract infection, or UTI. This occurs when bacteria in the urine causes an inflammatory response in the urinary tract. UTIs are more common in older cats and can be treated with antibiotics.
The good news is that there was no infection and the vet revealed he was perfectly healthy. However, that trip cost the owner $250 only to learn her cat is "a sensitive little guy." Something in the house stressed him out and he had been using urinating outside the litter box as a way to communicate how he's feeling.
Frustrated over the accidents around the house, the vet cost diagnosis, she silently screamed in the video. And once it was all let out, she comforted her black cat with pets.
Cats tend to feel their emotions strongly and stress, in particular, can be particularly harmful to these sensitive felines. The tiniest change in their routine can cause stress even to the most mellow of cats.
PetMD reported a cat's physical response to stress can be particularly harmful. A few signs indicating your cat is feeling stressed include increased vocalization, excessive grooming, urinating outside litter box, aggression, hiding, low energy, minimal appetite or water intake and diarrhea or vomiting.
A vet visit will rule out any potential medical reasons for your cat's change in behavior. They might also prescribe anti-anxiety medication. To minimize their stress, establish a routine to help remove an uncertainty the day might bring.
Consider providing your cat with positive attention—petting, grooming and interactive play— as well as providing a space with elevated perches, scratching surfaces, well-placed food and water bowls and clean litter boxes.
With over 1 million views, the TikTok video quickly brought up frustrated feelings as many owners shared similar experiences that cost them a fortune. One person shared: "I paid $400 for the vet to tell me he was dehydrated. (I forgot to give him the filtered water and he refused to drink it)."
Another added: "My cat kept peeing on the couch and wouldn't stop until we just got rid of it and put chairs there instead. Like okay, interior decorator."
The owner mentioned in a comment that her vet suggested filling the litter box with old towels or blankets to see if that helps because "some cats just like peeing on soft things."
