Owner Takes Puppy Wakesurfing For The First Time, And He Loves Every Minute
A puppy named Gus has delighted the internet with his incredible skills, in a clip that shows him enjoying a surfing day with his owner.
The heartwarming clip, shared on TikTok earlier in August under the username @the3retrievers_, shows the golden retriever puppy and his 20-year-old owner riding the waves on a surfboard in a lake in Indiana.
The pup looks thrilled by this new experience, and by the end of the clip, he can be seen paddling the waves with his paws.
"POV: my puppy goes surfing for the first time with my son," said a caption shared along with the viral clip.
The poster, Melanie, told Newsweek the dog featured in the clip is her newest puppy, Gus, a 14-week-old golden retriever, who she describes as very confident, curious, and friendly.
"He loves greeting people wherever he goes and he likes trying out new things. The first time we took him to the lake, he jumped right in the water and started swimming. When my husband got on our jet ski, Gus didn't hesitate to jump on it with him and go for a ride.
"My 20-year old son, who has taught many young children how to surf by holding them in front of him on the surfboard, taught Gus how to surf off our Super Air Nautique boat. He held on to him tightly by the handle on his shark lifejacket the entire time to make sure he felt safe.
"Gus absolutely loved this new experience and even started paddling the wave with his paws. We can't wait to see what else this brave puppy will venture out to do!"
As fun as surfing with your dog may sound, is it safe for the pup? The answer is absolutely yes!
Dr. Trevor Garb, veterinarian and regional doctor mentor at Thrive Pet Healthcare, told Newsweek that as with most outdoor activities, many dogs can happily participate in surfing.
"This includes surfing with you (tandem surfing), surfing alone on smaller, appropriate waves and beaches, and surfing or paddling with you on your stand-up paddleboard.
"If your dog enjoys surfing, it can become a lifelong activity you can share, providing important stimulation and exercise for you and your pup. It can also be a great bonding experience for the two of you."
According to Garb, controlling the surfboard and your dog is always your responsibility, so before starting this process, he suggests ensuring that you are competent in the water and understand the safety rules and surfing etiquette.
"You have an extra responsibility when adding a dog to the equation. If you're unsure about the beach you chose, ask local surfers and surf shops for advice. Some groups or individuals participate in this activity, and finding one to learn from would add to the enjoyment and safety of everyone.
"As with most complicated skills, especially those involving new surroundings and elements like water and the ocean, it's best to start when your dog is younger, ideally as an older puppy, after they have learned basic behavior."
The video quickly went viral on social media, getting viewers from across TikTok. It has so far received over 3.9 million views and 468,400 likes on the platform.
One user, ZO, commented: "We will be seeing this pup in 12 months surfing - what a kick - love it."
Robandhaley said: "Imagine when he's older now that he's growing up like this."
Kristin Bennett added: "I'm screaming this is the cutest thing I've ever seen."
