Watch Cat's Disgusted Reaction to Owner Trying To Kiss Her: 'So Humbling'
A woman has gone viral for her tragically relatable failed attempts to get her cat to show her affection.
Nina, 30, lives in New York with her two cats, calico Maya and tuxedo Munchkin. She told Newsweek that Maya "absolutely hates kisses from humans, but is DESPERATE for kisses from her brother Munchkin."
A clip shared to TikTok showing just how much Maya hates kisses has gone viral, racking up more than 23 million views since being uploaded on June 3.
In the video, shared to her account @lovemesomenina, Nina leans in to kiss Maya, who immediately leans back with a horrified expression on her face.
The kindergarten teacher tries again, only for Maya to do the same thing with an even more disgusted look, her teeth sticking out as she tries to get away from her owner.
At one point, Maya appears to lean close to Nina as if to give her a kiss of her own, but she dashes Nina's hopes as she expertly weaves away from her with the same wide-eyed horror on her face.
Nina captioned the video: "Having a cat is so humbling."
Naturally, this was a relatable experience to many cat owners, who flocked to the video to share close to 15,000 comments.
"My cat is so emotionally unavailable," one user lamented, with another joking: "When your emotional support animal is causing your emotional distress."
"Cats really make us beg for love and affection," one user wrote.
And one admitted: "My cat was supposed to mentally stabilize me but instead I just yearn for her affection like waiting for a text back from an uninterested boy."
Nina told Newsweek that Maya is "very selective with when she wants to be affectionate and it's always on her terms, as with most cats," but she does sometimes allow herself to be loved.
"She's affectionate at night when I go to bed—she'll lay next to me and purr and demand pets," she said. "We listen to podcasts together to fall asleep.
"Her brother Munchkin gives me affection in the morning. So evenings are Maya's time and mornings are Munchkin's."
Describing Maya as a "complete girly girl" who loves when the vase is full of flowers and sitting beside Nina as she does her hair, nails and makeup, she said Maya loves her brother Munchkin, and "if he's licking himself, she tries to stick her head under his mouth so he can lick her."
Cats, like dogs, can use licking to show affection, according to pet care company Purina. As well as a grooming technique, it's a way of creating a social bond, and a pet cat may lick other cats, other animals, and, if you're lucky, their owner.
However, if a cat is licking excessively it could be a sign of stress or anxiety.
